In this competition, young engineers attempt to design and build the most efficient model boats possible, which go through a variety of tests to evaluate various characteristics of the models.
The participants can participate with up to two different vessels and every team receives the same motor from the organization which will supply the needed power for the models. |
TESTS:
- Heavyweight (simulating cargo ships) - Lightweight (simulating recreational boats) - Long distance (evaluation of energy efficiency) |
Why do we participated in Hydrocontest?
We're naval engineering students, and we want to implement what we learnt in class in a fun and creative way. We were so excited to build our own boat, not only theoretically, but with our own two hands.
Which were the main objectives of our team?
Every year, our purpose is to have fun, meet new people and learn as much as we can! And, of course, giving our best restoring the heavyweight and building our lightweight the lightest as possible and be competitive.

2018 edition
The first days we managed to qualify on 10th place with the Lightweight, and on 9th place with the Heavyweight, feeling proud to know our change of concept while designing and hard construction work was beginning to show results.
With the Ligthweight, we managed to reach quarterfinals, and reaching 4th place with the Heavyweight. In the long distance race we managed to complete a total of 21 laps. This results put us on 3rd place in the global ranking.
Apart from out results, we didn't have any serious technical problems, leaving behind numerous setbacks the year before (with the batteries, speed controller and engine). The little problems we had this year were very minor.

2017 EDITION
Every second time can be an risky, and thus, our second try at Hydrocontest was quite an adventure.
This time, with two very different ships (a catamaran for the Lightweight category and Long Distance, and a wooden monohull for the Heavyweight category) we went to Saint Tropez, France.
The former experience gave us a new perspective, and that was shown in the results, being able to race all 3 trials, even though we had some last time setbacks.

2016 edition
Every first time is a challenge. Although we were inexperienced, we faced the project like an incentive for innovation. Furthermore, Hydrocontest is the perfect place to meet people with similar concerns!!
We built an only hull, modified with attachments for the different trials, that managed to overcome 2 out of the 3 trials. It was proven that to compete in all 3 trials with the same boat required a quite versatile model, which is quite difficult. That's why, in the following years, a decision was made to build two diferent models.
